On Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3, at 7:30 p.m. Berklee a Les Arts presents Sastipén Tali at the Aula Magistral of Les Arts.
“Sastipén Tali,” which translates as Health and Freedom in the Roma language, is a concert inspired by Giacomo Puccini’s masterpiece La Bohème and brought to life through a collaboration with the Palau de Les Arts and the students of Berklee Valencia.
The word “bohemian” was used by French speakers to refer to Roma people and others who lived among them in lower-rent districts of Paris and elsewhere, believing that they had originated from the Bohemia region of the Czech Republic. This term would later be adapted linguistically to refer to a particular artistic and impoverished lifestyle of an individual.
Moving alongside the musical trajectory of Roma people from Rajasthan to Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Bosnia, and Spain, in Sastipén Tali, we experience the libretto of La Bohème in reverse. From death to life, from isolation to community, to health and freedom. We self-investigate and confront our prejudices installed against communities living at the margins of society, and we celebrate the powerful role of art, when placed at the very center of life.
