Note About Symphonic Bands Workshops

The Symphonic Bands Workshops are sponsored through a joint partnership with the government of Valencia and offered exclusively to musicians and conductors that are members of the Federación de Sociedades Musicales de la Comunidad Valenciana.

Information about the 2016 Workshops

La Generalitat, a través de CulturArts Música, y Berklee College of Music Valencia han firmado un convenio de colaboración que permitirá un año más la integración de las sociedades musicales de la Comunitat Valenciana en esta institución académica.

De entre la oferta formativa de los cursos, se reservarán unas plazas para miembros de las agrupaciones de las sociedades musicales registradas en la FSMCV. 

 En la oferta formativa para el ejercicio 2016 de Berklee College of Music en Valencia se incluye un curso de arreglos y composición y un curso de dirección de banda. Ambos se realizarán del 25 al 29 de julio. 
 


En cuanto a la documentación requerida, además de la específica para cada curso, se necesita un certificado de la Federación en el que se acredite la pertenencia al Fichero de Personas relacionadas con la FSMCV.


Las solicitudes se podrán presentar del 1 al 27 de junio de 2016. 


Las listas con los alumnos seleccionados en cada curso se podrán consultar en la página web de CulturArts Música y Berklee Valencia a partir del 11 de julio de 2016.

Workshops

There are two symphonic bands workshops available, and students can sign up for one or both. Arranging and Composition for Symphonic Bands takes place in the morning and Conducting for Symphonic Bands takes place in the afternoon.


Arranging and Composition for Symphonic Bands (Morning Workshop)

Conductors, composers and arrangers of symphonic band will learn the basics of arranging for any ensemble. Specific arranging techniques will be presented and demonstrated. In addition, composers will be able to present their compositions in a masterclass setting. As all sessions will be held in the mornings, students can attend the conducting workshop in the evening if they choose.

10:00 – 12:45 Arranging Class 1 – Instrumentation of the symphonic band, the international grading system for bands, basics of the arrangement–melody, bass line, rhythm, countermelody

10:00 – 12:45 Arranging Class 2 - Setting up a lead sheet, transcribing a melody with chord changes

10:00 – 12:45 Arranging Class 3 – Setting up a short score, transcribing chord changes into written harmony patterns. Adding counterpoint lines and using chord substitutions.

Thursday

10:00 – 12:45 Arranging Class 4 – Basic layout of an arrangement in short score. Uses of introductions, transitions, interludes and codas. Harmonic modulations.

Friday
9:00 – 9:45 Composition Masterclass
10:00 – 12:45 Arranging Class 5 – Setting up a full score, transcribing basic patterns into larger textures of the symphonic band. Uses of the different choirs of instruments. Writing out parts.

Students may elect to participate in the Arranging and Composition workshop and Conducting Workshop concurrently.

Conducting for Symphonic Bands (Afternoon Workshop)

The Berklee Symphonic Band Conducting Workshop gives you an unparalleled opportunity to learn what it takes to be a professional conductor for a symphonic band. We'll help you find your unique strengths that make you stand out from the rest and get comfortable standing in front of a symphonic band. This workshop takes place in the afternoon/evening and can be taken as a conducting auditor for 300euros. The workshop has a maximum of 16 participant conductors, and maximum of 30 auditors.

The Conducting for Symphonic Bank Workshop will be held at Centro Instructivo Musical La Armónica de Buñol.

The program will be taught by Rafael Sanz-Espert, Music Director of the Banda Sinfónica de Madrid.
