BV CAMP–Youth (Berklee Valencia Contemporary Arts and Music Program)

BV Camp–Youth (Berklee Valencia Contemporary Arts and Music Program) is designed for young musicians ages 11–14 to develop their musicianship, theory, and performance skills. Students will have the opportunity to have group instrumental lessons, play in an ensemble, and explore a variety of contemporary music styles and genres. Students will also be exposed to new instruments, concepts, and skills that allow them to deepen their understanding of what it means to be a musician today. The experience culminates with a performance open to the Berklee Valencia community and students' families.

The BV Camp–Youth (Berklee Valencia Contemporary Arts and Music Program) will run simultaneously with the Music Production Summer Program, and there may be potential collaboration and interaction between the two programs.

What’s the Program Like?

The BV Camp–Youth (Berklee Valencia Contemporary Arts and Music Program) is an opportunity for students ages 11 to 14 to explore what it means to be a musician. Set at Berklee’s campus in Valencia, Spain, this one-week program is perfect for both beginners and those with some experience. Students take part in group lessons, play in an ensemble, and dive into music theory, all while discovering the exciting world of contemporary music.

With guidance from first-class instructors from Berklee’s Valencia, students develop their musical skills in a fun and supportive environment. They will also have the opportunity to try out new instruments and production techniques, and showcase their progress in a final performance for their families and the Berklee Valencia community. This unique program combines high-quality learning with a chance to experience life in Spain, making it a memorable and enriching experience for young musicians.

This experience includes engaging classes and workshops that highlight Valencia’s unique cultural landscape, offering a memorable and enriching experience for aspiring young musicians.

Program Details

What Will I Learn?

In the BV Camp–Youth (Berklee Valencia Contemporary Arts and Music Program), you will develop essential musicianship and instrument skills. You will learn foundational music theory, including melody, harmony, rhythm, ear training, and sight-reading. The program will deepen your understanding of your primary instrument within contemporary music genres and provide hands-on experience through group instruction and ensemble performance. You will also explore new instruments and musical styles, with a focus on Spanish and Mediterranean music, and have opportunities to perform in both formal and informal settings.

Entrance Requirements

Students ages 11 to 14 with at least six months of experience in playing an instrument or singing are welcome to apply. The program embraces all levels, styles, and musical backgrounds.

Participants must have a good command of English, as all instruction will be in English. While we do not require formal proof of English proficiency (such as TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo scores), students should be able to understand class materials and assignments effectively.

The Berklee Valencia Contemporary Arts and Music Program - Youth is strictly an on-campus academic program. It is not a residential program, and students are required to live independently off-campus in non-Berklee-sponsored housing. Berklee only provides supervision during the set hours of the program and does not supervise students outside of program hours. Parents/legal guardians shall ensure proper supervision and accompaniment of minors enrolled in BV Camp-Youth outside the scheduled hours of the on-campus program, as well as during their travels to/from Valencia.

Curriculum and Courses

Music Foundations:
This course aims to develop the essential skills needed to be a musician. Students will explore key elements of music theory related to their instrument, including melody, harmony, rhythm, ear training, and sight-reading.

Instrument Instruction:
The goal is to deepen students' understanding of their instrument within contemporary music genres. Students will collaborate with peers who play similar instruments and focus on skills necessary for playing in a contemporary ensemble.

Ensemble:
Students will gain experience playing various contemporary styles and preparing pieces for a final concert performance.

Exploration Labs:
These sessions are designed for students to experiment with new instruments, concepts, and skills, enhancing their overall musicianship.

Open Forum:
This is an opportunity for the community to engage in activities such as masterclasses, guest speaker events, open mic performances, or optional recordings with production students.
