What made you decide to study abroad at Berklee Valencia?

I was considering auditioning for Berklee back in high school, but I ended up taking a more traditional path. Last year at my Study Abroad Fair, I saw the Berklee stall and I thought, “I’ve been wanting this for such a long time,” and I wanted to figure out how much I really enjoyed music. Is it just a small hobby of mine, or is it something I could pursue professionally? So I ran up to them and told them I wanted to apply and now I’m here.

What does your course load look like?

My classes were mainly focused on music production and technology like Recording and Mixing Skills for Music Production and Virtual Production Techniques. But then I also took Legal Aspects of the Music IndustrySpanish 1, and was part of the ensemble Latin Jazz with Vocals, run by Javier Vercher, a professor from Madrid.

What creative opportunities have stood out to you during your time here?

Outside of the performance opportunities on campus, I’ve been going to lots of local jazz venues and not only listening to Spanish musicians perform, but also playing with them. There are lots of open mic nights all over town and I’ve been able to play with my Berklee classmates and with local Valencian musicians. So I’ve really been able to integrate myself into the local music scene.

How have you grown since starting the Study Abroad program?

Before coming to Berklee Valencia, I didn’t know much about recording, production, or mixing. But through my classes, I’ve built a solid foundation for making music from the ground up. I learned a lot about technical things—like what a microphone polarity pattern is, or the difference between types of recording microphones. I feel much more confident now.

What has life in Valencia been like outside the classroom?

I’ve really enjoyed Valencia as a city and the Mediterranean lifestyle. There are bike paths everywhere, so I bike to campus every day and the beach is only a six-minute bike ride away.

The people here, in general, are a lot more easygoing. Everyone’s a bit more relaxed, sort of taking a step back and enjoying life, and that creates a great environment for creativity and inspiration.

What would you say to someone who is considering studying abroad?

Definitely go for it. This is one of the best semesters I've had in college. I think the only regret I have is not choosing to study abroad for another semester. I’ve met amazing people, who are such talented musicians, and learned so much. I’d definitely recommend Berklee Valencia.
