Berklee a Les Arts: La Superficie Del Mar
On Tuesday, February 18, and Wednesday, February 19, at 7:30 p.m. CET, Berklee Valencia presents Berklee a Les Arts: La Superficie del Mar at the Teatre Martín i Soler of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.
La Superficie del Mar is a multidisciplinary production that reimagines the timeless themes of Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman through the poignant lens of Senta, the opera’s enigmatic heroine. Her love for the Dutchman—rooted not in the man himself, but in the portrait she has painted of him in her mind—becomes the very essence of this work.
Much like the surface of the sea, love can appear radiant and transparent, yet conceal fathomless depths beneath. What we see is seldom what truly exists, for the heart is an untamed ocean, where desires swell and illusions drift unmoored. Can such a vastness ever be contained in the outline of a single person? And is it reality or the privilege of fantasy alone that keeps love alive in us?
La Superficie del Mar becomes more than a tribute to Wagner’s opera. It is a meditation on the complexity of human psychology. Senta’s love, like the sea, exists as much in what is hidden as in what is seen. The performance asks us to consider: do we truly love another, or merely the portrait we paint of them? And when the tides of fantasy recede, what remains—a love anchored in reality, or the fragile, vanishing image of our longing?
Under the artistic direction of Magdalini Giannikou and the musical direction of Enric Alberich, Timotej Kotnik, Joanna Kucharczyk, and Albert Palau Garcera, the show features renowned artist Ariadna Montfort. With an extensive career as a dancer, choreographer, and movement director, Montfort brings her artistic expertise to this multidisciplinary production, adding depth and expression to the reimagining of Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman.
Tickets are available at Les Arts website for 7 euros.
