Kin Wai Wong M.M. ’19 was no newcomer to the music industry before attending Berklee Valencia. In 2004 he started working as a composer for jingle and television commercials at several production houses. In 2013 he founded the company Fun Track Music in Taiwan, and added film scoring to his set of skills.
“After 13 years working, I really needed to boost both my production and music-writing ideas. The Scoring for Film, Television, and Video Games master’s program seemed like a good choice, as the academic program really related to my daily work,” he said.
Besides the program’s curriculum, Wong learned something really valuable in Valencia: how to become a team member. “I always worked by myself, never as part of a team. I remember attending a seminar about how team players could help expand our careers, and the advice was to put together a team of people with different personalities in order to work in a harmonious way. That really impacted the way I thought about my career,” he said.
Wong put this into practice straight away. When he was still studying at Berklee Valencia, he received the opportunity to score the animated film The Great Detective Sherlock Holmes: The Great Jail-Breaker, and he chose three classmates to work as orchestrators and additional music composers. The team of four flew to Budapest for a weekend at the end of Wong’s second semester and recorded the score with the Budapest Orchestra.
So far, he has scored an impressive 400 television commercials, 15 movies, and four video games, but it doesn’t stop there: “After graduation I started producing and managing a new pop singer, Tse Nga Yi, from Hong Kong. She was nominated for the 2020 Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Award as Best New Singer, and one of our songs was nominated as Best Mandarin Song, too. ‘Home No More’ is her first song published as a professional singer under my company.”
He’s not slowing down anytime soon: Wong has more TV commercials on the way, along with two thriller films and more songs for Tse Nga Yi.
