The Berklee Mediterranean Music Institute and Berklee’s Valencia campus join forces to create the Mediterranean Roots Festival (Festival Raíces del Mediterráneo), a two-days event celebrating the musical heritage of the Mediterranean area, its influences and fusions. The festival will feature several Mediterranean music styles, with a variety of renowned performers in these musical traditions and unusual combinations with other genres. The concerts will take place at the Teatre Martin i Soler in the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.
For this first edition edition, the Mediterranean Roots Festival will join the UN Women HeForShe campaign, a worldwide solidarity movement which seeks to engage men and boys as advocates and agents of change in favor of gender equality.
Through the power of music, our commitment is to bring consciousness and awareness that gender equality is not only a women’s issue, but a human rights issue that needs to be addressed at all levels. Empowering women and acting against any discrimination, violence is a must for the developments of a healthy and prosperous society.
With the presence of HeForShe representatives, the Mediterranean Roots Festival will honor this campaign in a concert on October 29th featuring Mexican singer and UN Women spokesperson Magos Herrera offering a Mediterranean Jazz night with the Berklee Mediterranean Ensemble and Valencian alto saxophonist Perico Sambeat.
