Remembering Music

A music therapy workshop coinciding with World Alzheimer’s Day to acknowledge the impact of the disease and to celebrate those who are coping with it.

On October 21, 2016, coinciding with World Alzheimer’s Day, renowned Spanish music therapist Fátima Pérez from Fundación Alzheimer España, together with the founding chair of the Music Therapy Department at Berklee College of Music, prepared a workshop for Alzheimer’s patients from Asociación Familiares Alzheimer Valencia (AFAV) in collaboration with Berklee Valencia campus and the City of Arts and Sciences.

Under program director Casey Driessen’s tutorship, students from the Master of Music in Contemporary Performance (Production Concentration) program performed a repertoire of Spanish traditional songs, which were revealed to be meaningful for the patients after months of research conducted by Pérez, and different activities were proposed during the session involving both the patients and their relatives with the aim of bringing back their memories through music.
