Symphonic Band Workshops

The Symphonic Bands Workshops are sponsored through a joint partnership with the government of Valencia and offered exclusively to musicians and conductors that are members of the Federación de Sociedades Musicales of the Valencian region.

Workshops

There are two symphonic bands workshops available, and students can sign up for one or both. Arranging and Composition for Symphonic Bands takes place in the morning and Conducting for Symphonic Bands takes place in the afternoon.


Arranging and Composition for Symphonic Bands (Morning Workshop)

Conductors, composers and arrangers of symphonic band will learn the basics of arranging for any ensemble. Specific arranging techniques will be presented and demonstrated. In addition, composers will be able to present their compositions in a masterclass setting. As all sessions will be held in the mornings, students can attend the conducting workshop in the evening if they choose. The workshop has a maximum of 20 students and is taught in Spanish and English.

Admissions Criteria

A maximum of three original scores of Compositions and/or Arrangements should be submitted in pdf format. MP3 recordings of scores submitted are encouraged. Students who have had at least one composition and/or arrangement performed in a public concert by a symphonic band are preferred. Materials must be submitted by email to specialprogramsvalencia@berklee.edu.

10:00 – 12:45 Arranging Class 3 – Setting up a short score, transcribing chord changes into written harmony patterns. Adding counterpoint lines and using chord substitutions.

10:00 – 12:45 Arranging Class 4 – Basic layout of an arrangement in short score. Uses of introductions, transitions, interludes and codas. Harmonic modulations.

10:00 – 12:45 Arranging Class 5 – Setting up a full score, transcribing basic patterns into larger textures of the symphonic band. Uses of the different choirs of instruments. Writing out parts.

Students may elect to participate in the Arranging and Composition workshop and Conducting Workshop concurrently.

Conducting for Symphonic Bands (Afternoon Workshop)

The Berklee in Valencia Symphonic Band Conducting Workshop gives you an unparalleled opportunity to learn what it takes to be a professional conductor for a symphonic band. We'll help you find your unique strengths that make you stand out from the rest and get comfortable standing in front of a symphonic band. This workshop takes place in the afternoon/evening and can be taken as a conducting auditor for 300euros. The workshop has a maximum 12 participant conductors, and maximum 30 for auditors.

The Conducting for Symphonic Band Workshop will be held on Berklee College of Music's Valencia campus as well as the Symphonic Band Societies Rehearsal Facilities (Comunidad Valenciana). The workshop is taught in Spanish and English.

Admissions Criteria

- Students applying as a conducting participant should send a video (Quicktime format or similar) of your conducting. Conducting a live ensemble is preferred. Applicants who have already conducted a symphonic band in a public concert are preferred.
- Students applying as a conducting auditor need to sent a short resume (less than one page) stating your experience as a composer, conductor or performer.
